Project #2

For this project, I am making 100 tea cups, going on various adventures and missions to share tea with people, and recording the encounters and expeditions on the surface of the cups.

I will...

  1. Work in the world
  2. Go on expeditions
  3. Make decisions based on random choices
  4. Create an interaction between subject and the environment
  5. make unrealistic expectations for myself
  6. complete the assignment through a series of mini-assignments
  7. Document
Making the tea cups... 30 in, 70 to go.
The real adventure will be having tea with hundreds of people.

Project 2 Constraints

Although I’m not completely sure what I’m looking to learn, I know my work will definitely be a kind of research. I want to investigate memory and it’s influence on information. I’m interested in how memory transforms information, so I’m currently looking to work with information regurgitated onto paper. What I will do with these papers, I’m not completely sure, though I think this choice will become clearer once I have the papers.

1 Work with people from different fields: This comes pretty easy to my idea. The basis of this experiment is to gather lots of results, so I anticipate running this test on many different people from many different fields. At the moment, I anticipate working with blue collar workers, physicists, mathematicians, psychologists, gender studies researchers, artists. The more diverse my test pool is, the more potential I see this project having.
2 Adopt various professional roles: Specifically, I see my self adopting the role of a psychologist. The tests I’ll be conducting will deal directly with memory, so by nature, makes me a researching psychologist. Depending on how the results come back, I may run statistical analysis while creating the finished piece which would make me a statistician. Also, I predict this piece relating to entropy, so I may need to use my physicist side when constructing or writing about this piece.
3 Create small assignments along the way: Since there are many unknown variables to what I want out of this project, I’m setting small goals, so I can reflect on the work as it progresses. My first goal is to choose a source text and begin running the test on myself. After doing this, I will consider the outcome, and possibly proceed to run the test on other people.
4 Go for expeditions, surveys, investigations: Again, this is innate to the piece. My art will be conducting investigations into memory through a survey of sorts. These surveys will ultimately be the medium of the piece.
5 Create participations between subject and environment: My test subjects will be creating the papers used to construct the environment for the finished piece.
6 Photograph, document, collect: this piece is going to be great. How could I not document it? But for real, I think photographs, paper scans, and texts will be the majority of my documentation.

7 (Bonus) Work in the world: since my project is turning into a kind of research, I think it’s important that I work in the field of research. I should be aware of how researchers publish their research, share their results, and connect with each other. I think it’s important to try to tap into this world, and possibly become a researcher myself.

Project #2 Constraints

I didn't see an assignment created for this on canvas so I thought I'd share this here.

IDEAS FOR PROJECT 2

I want to create harmonious pairings. Of flavor, of dialogue, and of stories. I set out to discover what can be created based off of conversation and collaboration. For this piece, my focus is on the process and interest in plants, food, conversations over food and coffee, and exploring nature. I want to take on the role of a botanist, and take it even farther to the imaginative world of alchemy, while also engaging my love of cooking and creating. For this project, I would like to have conversations with people. I want to learn about their history, their likes, their favorite flavors, and their view on food and the environment. I want to create a piece based off of the information I gather that focuses on edibles plants and cuisines, while also maintaining the identity of those I speak with. Though seemingly vague, I have an idea of my final sculptural piece that represents the duality between my senses and history and those I speak to's tastes and memories. It may be in something edible or just a visual, but I want to represent the beauty of two locals coming together through a love of plants and food to create duality in something intimate. I have somewhat of an idea to work with plants and flavor pairings and possibly make hybrid plants or dishes based off of each interaction I make.

Constraints:

Adopt various professional roles –  I will be a researcher, an explorer, an adventurer, a botanist, an alchemist, a gardener, and a chef.  I will learn about plants, discover flavors, create concoctions, try to grow a garden, and experiment as much as I can.

Go for expeditions – I want to engage with the locals. I want to travel to various sites in nature that I have not been to. I’d like to go to the springs, the prairie, and various neighborhoods, restaurants, and garden shops, to talk to people about their history and also pick and forage plants and edibles in the locale.

(Create unrealistic expectations for yourself) – Since I’m focused on exploration, discovery, and the process of this project, I’m not sure what the final outcome or sculptural piece will be yet, but since I am focusing on plants and the coming together of people and tastes, I may aim to try and create ‘hybrid plants’ based on the joining of flavor profiles and tastes of the community members I meet and speak with.

Create participation between subject and environment – I will immerse myself in the environment, whether it be with other people or with the surrounding flora. I’d like to interact with plants around me and partake in various dialogues amongst locals.

Use different kinds of senses to obtain knowledge – With a focus on flavor and plants, I will taste as many edibles as I safely can. I will smell my surrounding environments, I will touch every plant I can, and I will actively glance around me on my strolls around town.

Work with people from different disciplines – I plan to talk to chefs, agriculturalists, baristas, astrophysicists, botanists, and anyone that would like to chat about food, plants, the environment, or even themselves.

I will photograph, document, and collect as many stories, plants, and collaborative memories as I can. I plan to have a lot.

FUture of Fashion? 3D Printed Clothing

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2873320/Is-future-fashion-4D-dress-created-using-printer-unveiled-takes-48-hours-costs-1-900-make.html

The dress, which costs a staggering £1,900 ($3,000) to print, features 2,279 printed panels interconnected by 3,316 hinges.

Creators Nervous System call it a ‘4D dress’ as, like fabric, the printed garment can go from a compressed object to its intended shape

Negative Tourism

From the readings, Traveling on Foot When Herzog was talking about "...tourist destroys cultures." I read this article a day prior.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/09/18/tourist-sea-turtles-costa-rica-eco-tourism-nesting/72386234/
It talks about tourist in Costa Rica and disturbing the Sea Turtles nesting grounds. Even if you look at the pictures its disheartening to see.
