What's your relationship with food / Art of food presentation

Here's a topic I've been growing increasingly interested in. Food is such a basic part of our life. It's the basic constituent of our energy and lively hood, yet so few of us truly understand what we eat. We eat the cookie or sandwich that comes our way, or shovel down corn flakes and smoke a cup of coffee or three and head out the door. What's your relationship to the food you eat?
Here's an interesting bit on comparing different cultural food presentations. http://www.cravemag.com/features/the-art-of-food-presentation/

Japanese city shaves mountain to avoid future tsunamis

I found this short video discussing how Japan is literally moving mountains to rebuild from the groud up after the 2011 tsunami that took out a tenth of the population in Rikuzentakata, Japan.

Talk about Earthworks! :)

Hurra Torpedo

Hey guys,

this is the musical group I mentioned in class. Their name is Hurra Torpedo, and here are a few of their performances.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysUjYAi0WcQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9evhR-iJSE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMr1m7Di0eg

Aside from being pretty comical, I can't help but find the aggressive nature of their performances captivating. They're covering main steam, female-vocal, pop songs in a heavy Norwegian punk style: off key vocals, trashy percussion sounds, and dropped tuning guitars. Destroying big ticket household appliances to make their music only enhances their rejection of the mainstream ideals, hence they're almost covering the songs ironically.

There's also a strong highlight of the cost of making music, that is, the inevitable wear and tear on one's instrument, the monetary value of instruments, and the physical labor needed to generate music. Being that these big ticket appliances are being destroyed pretty heavily, it's easy for one to perceive their performances as costly in many senses of the word.

At the very least, the creation of music though intentional and aggressive ruination is an interesting paradox.

Time machine scene

Hey everyone here is some of the scenes I mentioned from class, the 1960s time machine scene and an example of the Wind Rises movie by Studio Ghibli.

Also this weekend I watched a movie called "All is Lost" its on netflix and it deals with one man battling with the sea while trying to survive. It reminded me of what we went over in class and is a great movie by itself as well.

Vipassana

Hey everyone! It's cool to hear interest in the technique of Vipassana meditation. It is really about the art of living, so here is some more information about it.

A transcript of a talk given by the teacher of Vipassana, S. N. Goenka: https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/about/art

Vipassana also makes use of another technique, called Anapana. While Vipassana is only taught in retreat, Anapana can be learned from these recorded instructions. https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/about/mini_anapana
